Overview

Valaskjold care home in Sarpsborg, Norway, serves 32 long-term care residents. Like many Norwegian facilities, they faced a unique challenge: neither unit-dose barcodes nor multidose bag scanning were available in their market. MedEye provided a path to full medication verification where conventional approaches simply weren't an option.

How MedEye Started

Before MedEye, medication rounds at Valaskjold followed a familiar pattern. Multidose pouches arrived from the pharmacy, while remaining medications were handpicked from local stock. Nurses administered medications based on schedules and marked completion manually - not per medication, but as a single confirmation that "everything has been done."

The process involved too many steps where nurses had to read, compare, and double check - all of which took time and introduced the possibility of error. There was no structured verification method in place; occasional four-eyes checks were the only safeguard. There were no specific incidents driving the change - just a commitment to better quality of care and a recognition that the existing process had gaps that could be closed.

No barcode infrastructure - No unit-dose barcodes existed on medications that could be used for automated checking

Time-consuming manual checks - Too much nurse time spent reading, comparing, and verifying medications by hand

No digital data from pharmacy - The pharmacy could not provide electronic contents data for multidose bags, ruling out conventional automated verification

Paper-based documentation - No digital audit trail for what was actually administered to each patient

Our Approach

MedEye was introduced as a pilot on one ward, using the MedEye eMAR module to replace the paper-based process entirely. The system was integrated with the facility's ADC for easier dispensing and with the medication carts - so MedEye automatically opens the correct drawer when a nurse is administering medications to a patient.

Since the pharmacy could not provide electronic data about multidose bag contents, MedEye deployed its visual verification technology to read the bags directly and match the contents to prescriptions. When discrepancies are found, staff are guided through the pill verification process to correct them. The result: a fully digital, fully verified workflow built around the technology that was available - not the technology the market wished it had.

Automated drawer access - MedEye integrates with the medication cart to open the correct drawer automatically, removing a daily source of friction

Visual multidose verification - Where the pharmacy couldn't provide digital data, MedEye reads the bags visually and matches contents to prescriptions

Fully digital workflow - All medication information accessible on screen, replacing paper lists and manual record-keeping

Complete verification - Every medication checked, every administration documented, every change detected

Results

Nurses reported a noticeable reduction in daily handlings. Some new steps were added - but these were steps to catch and correct errors that would previously have gone unnoticed. Where double-checking had been sporadic before, every medication is now verified against the prescription.

Staff feedback has been consistently positive. MedEye brings together the ADC, the medication cart, and the eMAR into a single workflow that feels natural rather than burdensome. There is no double work, no paper checklists, no second-guessing - just correct administration.

Final Thoughts

Valaskjold demonstrates that a lack of barcode infrastructure doesn't have to mean a lack of medication safety. By combining visual verification, smart integrations, and a fully digital workflow, MedEye delivered what the Norwegian market had been told was impossible: complete medication verification without depending on barcodes or pharmacy data feeds. The technology adapted to the reality on the ground - and the results speak for themselves.
